This set includes 2 bamboo mekugi and 1 brass seppa for a Japanese katana. The mekugi are made of cured smoked bamboo to strengthen them and make them less prone to failure. Each is about 1" long and 0.2" wide (diameter).
Mekugi lock the tsuka to the nakago and hold the handle in place. Traditionally, swords needed one mekugi; most modern swords require two. The seppa is made of brass, a traditional koshirae material, and is approximately 1 to 1.5 mm thick.
The seppa helps provide shock absorption from contact, supports a good fit between the habaki, blade, and tsuka, separates the blade from the hand-guard, and helps eliminate tsuba rattling.
