Most commonly associated with pirates, cutlasses were used throughout the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries by mariners of many different nationalities and backgrounds. Furthermore, while they were indeed used as the sidearm of choice for this profession, cutlasses were also a valuable tool, and were used in much the same way as modern day machetes.
