Safes have been around for a long time. They were invented in the 13th century BC and though they were initially made with wood, eventually they were made with assorted types of metal. They were kept secure by keys and/or combination locks but it rarely prevented thieves from “picking” the lock or “cracking” the combination. In the 20th century, we see the introduction of diversion safes (also called disguised safe or hidden safe). This type of safe is disguised as ordinary household products or objects and is a place to hide small valuables or cash. Imagine a hairbrush that functions as a safe!
Safes come in all shapes and sizes and are disguised in many different objects like books, household products, drink cans, rocks, etc. They don’t require locks or keys and have the distinct ability to “hide in plain sight”. They also serve a variety of purposes, ranging from a place to hide valuables from criminals to one where parents can keep their children from finding dangerous things. The idea is to have the “safe” blend into its natural environment, like a book on a shelf, laundry supplies, bottles and cans of assorted liquids, or a box of cake mix. A lot of companies have agreements with manufacturers to use their packaging and labeling on these secret storage products. That means that the can of soup you’re storing your jewelry in looks exactly like a can of Campbell’s soup – it’s not an imitation.
The non-lethal aspect of a secret safe is also appealing to a lot of people. Some would rather not have a weapon in their house to protect their valuables because they may young children or they just feel uncomfortable around a dangerous weapon. A fake book box would be a great alternative for them. Conversely, others may not have a problem with having a gun in their house, they just wouldn’t want it to get stolen. To remedy both of those concerns, Cutting Edge Products offers two products, the Book Safe and the Hand Gun Hider Book Gun Safe. Most burglars spend less than six minutes inside a victim's home and only have time to check the most obvious places for valuables. Books are possibly the most common concealment devices in usage. They are easily made and can conceal quite large objects. They are also very difficult for outsiders to spot but easy to recognize for those who are looking for a specific book on a shelf.
