This wearable reproduction of an Imperial Itallic Roman officer helmet is styled after helmets used by the Roman army from the 1st century BC to the early 2nd century AD. Its design originated in the Roman Empire’s Gaul region, now modern-day France and Belgium, and retains influences of the original Gallic construction. The Imperial style was more ornate than the earlier Coolus helmet and offered better protection; unlike the bronze Coolus, it was made of iron. Its extended neck guard and brass-reinforced details provided additional protection. The helmet also made officers recognizable to their soldiers and added height.
The helmet is polished 20-gauge carbon steel with brass fittings. Steel wings with golden rivets are mounted on hinges, and scalloped steel patterns adorn the top. A horizontal reinforcing visor crosses the front and is fitted with two steel rivets. Double-layered brass reinforces the edges; brass accents are made for durability. Brass reinforcement is also present at the ear holes, with brass bosses on the neck and cheek guards.
It has a fake leather liner, an adjustable chin strap and leather support cords to keep the plume attached correctly without movement. The officer’s red crest runs from back to front; a centurion helmet’s crest runs from side to side. Model sold separately.
