The Templar Order was established in 1118 A.D. to ensure the safety of the Holy Land and to protect the pilgrimage routes. The institution reached its maximum splendor in the 13th century. The Knights Templar considered themselves to be Knights of God, the honor of the church and of Christianity. Their motto was: "NON-NOBIS, DOMINE, NON-NOBIS, SED TUO NOMINI DA GLORIAM." (Not to us, God, not to us, but to Your name give glory."). It was a very well-organized military force, and they were the shock forces in the Crusades. They were the vanguard during attacks and the rearguard during retreats. For a century they ensured the effective governance of the Latin kingdom of Constantinople. They did not pay taxes or tributes, and they had properties all over Europe and the Middle East. They obeyed only the Pope.
