This hand-forged Viking axe features a custom Damascus steel head made from multiple layers of 15N20 and 1095 high-carbon tool steels. The billet is folded and re-welded several times, with patterns formed by manipulating the steel during forge welding. Acid treatment highlights the layered pattern by affecting the hard and soft steels differently.
The combination of hard and soft steel creates blade flexibility and toughness, along with invisible serrations that aid cutting. The Damascus steel hardness is 55-60 HRC on the Rockwell scale. The axe head features a mosaic pin, and the sturdy Cocobolo wood handle has a brass lanyard hole pin.
