This hand-forged Viking axe has a custom Damascus steel head and a Cocobolo wood handle. The axe head features a mosaic pin, and the handle has a brass lanyard hole pin.
The Damascus billet is forge-welded from multiple layers of 15N20 and 1095 high-carbon tool steels, then folded and rewelded several times. The pattern is created by manipulating the steel during forge welding and highlighted when acid reacts differently with the hard and soft steel layers. The Damascus steel hardness is 55-60 HRC on the Rockwell scale. The layered steel is described as providing flexibility and toughness, with invisible serrations that aid cutting.
